I sat down with Grant Wells, our VP Sales, to get to know one of the key players at Active Canada leading the charge in new account growth. 

Explain your job as you would to a 5-year-old?

I work for a company known around the world as Active International. Simply, we transform things that companies don’t want into something they do want.

Why Sales and why @ Active?

I’m a true advocate of Active’s approach of respectfully engaging with our customers.  I understand that their time is valuable, and I respect that. There is no “one size fits all” approach to what we do and every business requires careful thought, consideration and insight.  We perform our due diligence by researching and understanding their business first.  In other words, let’s not sell them something they don’t need; it’s not about us, it’s about them.  We’re more interested in doing it right the first time so we can confidently walk through a door they open to us for the next transaction. When done correctly it is truly gratifying we’ve been welcomes back as a partner instead of a vendor.

Most memorable moment at Active?

The first day I joinedthe company and ‘got busy’.

Tell us about your charity of choice and the last thing you did to support it?

It would have to be the Canadian Cancer Society. Specifically funds generated to find a cure for LLS.  I have participated in many distance walks, supportive golf tournaments and I’m looking to recruit some of my colleagues to form a team and participate in Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer this Fall.

If you weren’t in your current career you would probably be ……

Probably in a profession in or similar to Sales where I could still engage daily with my fellow man (and woman). I really enjoy the interaction and making as many new acquaintances as possible. It’s my fuel.

Adjective your family would use to best describe you?

Reliable.

Adjective your Customers would use to best describe you?

Accountable.

Adjective your best friend would use to best describe you?

Loyal.

What’s the most innovative thing you’ve seen a customer do to unlock value from their assets?

One of our clients had an old piece of capital equipment  (a corrugator used to form cardboard) and it became obsolete. It was mammoth in size and took way too much warehouse space. Sections of the machinery were placed in overseas shipping containers, however it would have taken more funds to ship it overseas to a potential re-purchaser. Now what? Active provided the solution of smelting the metal down for recycling and sold the end product in return for trade credits to extend their media spend. Needless to say they’ve been on board with us for a long time and we are grateful for the partnership.

Favourite Ad of all time?

Canadian Tire’s bicycle ad. The one where the father takes the bike out of the back of his pickup truck and presents it to his son…and the look on the little guy’s face….classic. Tugs at the heartstrings!
